Singh Di Mandi. This area was also known for the tawaif culture, especially during the Mughal period in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Mughals used to

Shahi Mohalla. Mujra used to be performed here to entertain the heart, to please the king Maharaja, it was their job to entertain the heart for the night

A 22-year-old misldar named Ranjit Singh captured Lahore in May 1799 and declared himself Maharaja of Punjab in 1801. He reintroduced Mughal

royal customs including the culture of courtesans and their court dances. Women became courtesans and every day were his women for their hunger of

bodies. Once again, the courtesans of the royal neighbourhood found a place in the royal court. In 1802, Ranjit Singh fell in love with a Muslim

courtesan named Moran, which led him to build a separate mansion in Papad Mandi near the royal neighbourhood. After Singh’s death in 1839,

General-turned-Prime Minister Hira Singh Dogra started running the royal neighbourhood in his own way and created a den for market women where

prostitution and vulgar business started taking place.

 Pakistan’s ”HeeraMandi Market” started in 1584 when Mughal emperor left Fatehpur Sikri and went to Lahore. At that time Lahore was the capital of Mughal Sultanate and
it had this status till 1598. During this time Akbar gave a residential area in Lahore for courtiers and nobles and named it Shahi Mohalla. Arrangements
were made for entertainment. Courtesans were brought here from Kabul and the trend of Mujra started. At that time courtesans were respected a lot.
Their quarrels were supported and people sent their children to them for training. This trend of courtesans continued till the 18th century. In 1757
Ahmad Shah attacked and in that year Lahore was also destroyed.During their rule the Afghans opened more brothels and the work of the courtesans
came to a halt. This situation continued for 40 years. On 17th July 1799 Maharaja Ranjit Singh captured Lahore and the rule of the Sikhs began. Mujra
started again under Maharaja Ranjit. At that time the girls were divided into two categories – one who danced only for the kings and the other, the
women who were prostitutes were also given the title of Kanjari. The courtesans received a lot of respect in the Maharaja’s kingdom. They were given

married some Muslim courtesans among whom were Mora Sarkar and Begum. No, Mora Sarkar had built a bridge which is eaten by Kanjari. This bridge
